SAINTS-N-AINTS CLUB HISTORY

In September 1977 Ron Bliven and his wife, Terry, started a new square dance class at the Milner Crest School in Coos Bay, OR.  This first class graduated 32 students who would become “Charter Members”. The name “Saints-n-Aints” was submitted by Greg and Judy Packwood, voted on and became the club name.  The official formation of the club was in April of 1978.  Ron Bliven left the club in 1983 to start a new square dance class in Reedsport.  Phil Lindsay then became the temporary caller, but only for a short time, and soon we were without a caller. In 1984 Marvin and Doris Murray (who is now the only charter member left in the club as Marvin passed away in 2013) took a trip to Portland and returned with five records.  These they gave to Sherm Welch (by then he and Carol were club members) and said “learn these by Saturday night”. He did and has since become a very good full fledged caller for our club.

Vonnie Nordquist was our cuer. When she left (her husband got a job in Alabama) we hired another person to cue but it did not work out. He was a clogger and only cued once. Someone in the club said it needed to be one of our members and they chose Donna Hiserote, who said that at this point she did not want to do it full time so Steve Hoisington said he would help. Steve has since retired and Donna is now our full time cuer along with Cherie Cox & Cathy Houston.

The dances were held at the Milner Crest School in Coos Bay until around the middle of 1986, then a change was made and we moved to Driftwood Hall in North Bend.  In May of 2000 notification was received that our rental agreement must meet Federal standards and the rent would be raised to an amount we could not handle and so we were able to get the Englewood School in Coos Bay to use temporarily.  Several months later we moved to the “Tioga Ballroom” – the second floor of the tallest building in downtown Coos Bay.  When it was sold in November of 2005 we moved to the basement of the First United Methodist Church in Coos Bay, where we are today.
